A Drum Stem Still Wasn’t Enough

Getting the drums away from a song helps. Sometimes the next useful step is getting the kick away from the rest of that drum stem.

Six clearly named drum parts fan out from a single drum stem.

A drum stem is useful, but it is still a mix. The kick, snare, toms, hats, ride, and crash arrive together. If you want to replace one part or build a kit from the performance, the first separation has only solved part of the problem.

That is why Quota Stems 1.2 adds a second pass for drums.

Start with one stem

The workflow begins with the drum stem, then separates it into six named parts: kick, snare, toms, hi-hat, ride, and crash. The simpler four-way choice remains available when kick, snare, toms, and cymbals are enough.

Those are different working materials. A kick file can become a replacement layer. A hat or ride can be sampled without carrying as much of the snare. Separate cymbal parts can make an arrangement easier to reshape.

Listen to what the model actually gave you

Separation is an estimate. A dense mix or layered percussion can leave bleed, soften a transient, or divide a sound imperfectly. Six files are useful when they give you more control; they are not a promise of isolated multitracks.

Keep the original and the simpler separation nearby. The best result is the one that helps the piece you are making.

Put the output choices around the job

The Options redesign follows the same practical idea. Start with a recognizable destination—Just Stems, Ableton Session, Force, MPC, or Kit Maker—then adjust the details. Custom choices remain available when the preset is not your workflow.

A producer should be able to get a useful result before becoming an expert in every export setting.

Keep the entry point free

Quota Stems remains free on Mac and Windows. The current 1.2.1 maintenance build repairs URL imports and returns failed jobs to the app more cleanly. Video services still change independently, so a local source file is the dependable option.
